Summer in the city – what could be better than a week on Granville Island, enjoying the many exhibitions, large and small, as well as the ongoing demonstrations of work by Korean and BC artists working with fibre. Emily Carr University on Granville Island in Vancouver is the site for most Fibre, Naturally exhibit events. Other Granville Island locations will also feature paper-related exhibits and Hanji paper demonstrations by both visiting Korean and local artists.

Gallery Exhibit – August 11 to 16 – Emily Carr University – Concourse Gallery
Tuesday to Friday – 8am to 6pm; Saturday 9am – 6pm; Sunday 9am – 5pm
This exhibition focuses on Hanji paper – handmade Korean paper from the inner bark of the Mulberry tree. Two and three dimensional works feature paper in a myriad of formats: books and boxes, hangings and accessories, items that are felted, dyed, stitched and shaped. Artists have also used paper yarns in works that are woven, knitted, and crocheted. Paper like you have never seen it before.

TICKETS for the extraordinary paper garment Fashion Show, part of the exhibit Fibre, Naturally will be available to Guild members in May, before they go on sale to the general public in June.

Fashion Show

Emily Carr Theatre on Granville Island

Thursday, August 13 at 7:30pm

Tickets $20.00 available at the May guild meeting

or order through Bonnie Adie badie@telus.net; 604-988-3240

These will be a hot item, so get your order in.

The show promises to be spectacular! There are 40 garments coming from Korea and some wonderful items from our own members.

HANJI ENTRIES: updated information on digital images The steering committee made some early decisions to get the entry information out to Guild members and based the digital information on what the CABC was using. At our last meeting we realized we don’t need to be so technical!

Entry forms and other information ( cv’s etc )

Please send up to 3 images per entry in jpeg format.

Files can be up to 500K each, and preferably created on a template no larger than 5 x 7.

We will accept them on CD’s or email.

Identify each with the first 3 letters of your last name, your first initial, and 1a, 1b, 1c — the “1″ referring to the entry number, the “a”, “b”, or “c” referring to the first, second, and third images relating to that entry. (eg front view, back view, and detail).

Should you require more entry information, it can be found on the Guild web sites, or you can email annihunt@mac.com and she will email you the submission guidelines, and the entry form. However, to make our work a little easier, please try to source the info from the web sites.

But most importantly, this is your show, please enter! June 1 deadline.

Tips for photographing your work: Use a plain background and be sure the object stands out from the background. Good lighting will help this and can enhance texture and other details.

In 2008, Felicia Lo presented a guild program on “Photography for Textiles”. The notes that she gave out at that meeting are available on her blog. Her website is www.sweetgeorgiayarns.com

Fibre, Naturally

Wow, we’ve seen previews of some of the work from our own Guild artists, and this is one exhibit you won’t want to miss! And there will be lots going on all over Granville Island so mark the week of August 11 – 16 on your calendar for sure, and don’t forget the June 1 deadline for entries.

There will be associated exhibits at several Granville Island locations; there will be ongoing demos; and of course there will be several special events at Emily Carr in connection with the exhibition.

The Craft Council of BC will host a Gala Fundraiser in the Gallery on Tuesday evening, August 11. On the Wednesday evening the Canadian Society for Asian Arts will present a free lecture on Hanji paper, given by Sang Jae Nam, and there will be demonstrations of the joomchi paper making process in the foyer of the Concourse Gallery. For more info on these and other events, check the web site www.cabc.net.

And of course on the Thursday evening we will enjoy some beautiful paper garments in a Fashion Show choreographed and designed by our own Guild members. There will be more information forthcoming on all of these events and more, and members of the 2 Guilds and FibreEssence will have the first opportunity, in May, to buy tickets for the Fashion Show ($20) before they go on sale to the public in June.

And there is one more exciting event: Emily Carr is presenting a Fibre Institute, with screen printing and dye classes from May 30, as well as a 3 day Master Class with Sang Jae Nam, Yvonne Wakabayashi, and Ros Aylmer. Registration opens April 16 at www.ecuad.ca/cs or 604-844-3810.

The Korean art of Hanji is a centuries old tradition of making paper with the bark of the mulberry tree. Korean artisans have moved this tradition beyond its original borders, making not only beautiful papers, but also paper yarns, and fabrics using silk, cotton, or linen warp and paper weft.

The VGFA, and the GVWSG, are partnering with a group of Hanji artists from Jeonju, Korea for an exhibition of work to be held August 11 through 16 at the Concourse Gallery, Emily Carr University, Granville Island. The exhibit will also be shown at the Visual Arts Centre in Port Coquitlam and at FibreWorks on the Sunshine Coast for a 3 week period after the initial exhibit.

The artists from Jeonju use the Hanji product to make weavings, garments, and traditional and non-traditional items, both 2D and 3D.

Working with at least 50% paper of any type, B.C. artists from the VGFA and the GVWSG, as well as fibreEssence, are being invited to submit works for this show. The submission deadline is June 1, and the jury fee is $10 for up to 2 pieces. We are looking for a variety of quality art pieces and garments to exhibit alongside the Korean works.

This promises to be a very prestigious show as the CABC is holding their Gala fundraiser on site during the exhibit; the Canadian Society for Asian Arts is sponsoring a lecture on site, and there will be a choreographed fashion show of stunning paper or paper/fabric garments on the Thursday evening. This is in addition to the many demonstrations of paper techniques by Korean artists, and the Fibre Institute courses being offered by Emily Carr University.

The Koreans are sending 40 paper garments which will be featured in our extraordinary fashion show. With this in mind we are hoping that members of both Guilds will be inspired to create garments using paper and/or tyvek, or other approved papers, for at least 50% of the garment. We have been asked if the lining may be fabric, or if it counts as part of the 50% rule. The committee has decided that if the lining is unseen when the garment is worn, it will not be counted against the paper content of the item.

Similarly, if a hanging or other piece requires backing that is not seen when the piece is displayed, that material will also not be weighed against the paper content.

The submission information and entry forms can be found on the guild web sites, and we are encouraging everyone to enter, as your committee is putting a lot of work into ensuring that this will be a first class opportunity to show the work of the many talented Guild members, alongside the beautiful work from Korea, and in the prime locations represented by the 3 participating galleries. All accepted work will be shown on Granville Island, before the show is split into 2, for the exhibits in Port Coquitlam and on the Sunshine Coast.

For immediate release

For example Joan Smith would call her files smijoa1a, for the front view; 1b for the detail, and 1c if there is a 3rd image. For the second piece it would be smijoa2a, and so on. If selected, name the print quality images the same, with the addition of the letter p at the end – thus: smijoa1ap.

Selected images will be used for publicity purposes. Image quality will affect your chance of being selected for this exhibit and your work being featured in our promotional material. Tips: use a plain background when photographing your work, and be sure the object stands out from the background. Good lighting will help this and can enhance texture and other details.
